Charged: 50501 Veterans' Dana Briggs on What Follows a Protest
Aired live on August 26, 2026.
Dana Briggs, an Air Force veteran and member of 50501 Veterans, Veterans For Peace and Common Defense, described being shoved and arrested outside the ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, a night in the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center, a felony charge downgraded and then dropped, and the lawsuit he joined over DHS taking his DNA. The show opened with a veteran arrested that afternoon in Greene County, Missouri.
Show notes
50501 Veterans member Dana Briggs joins the Smoke Pit to talk about what happens after the crowd goes home.
Briggs, of Rockford, Illinois, was at the Broadview ICE detention facility when, he says, a Border Patrol agent pushed him to the ground. He was then charged with assaulting that agent. The case has not been resolved. He walks through the arrest, the charge, and the months since.
The conversation goes wider than one incident. What protections do veterans actually have when they exercise the rights they swore to defend. Where does lawful assembly end and federal charge begin, and who decides. What does a veteran risk, legally and personally, by standing in a place the government would rather they not stand.
We do not litigate the case on air. We hear from the man living it.
